Why Am I Overweight?

People are overweight because they eat more than they burn. It's all in the numbers. Patients need to evaluate the following:

 Food choices and amounts
 Exercise and activity
 Metabolism

Of these three aspects of weight, we have the most control of our eating behavior and exercise/activity. We have much less control of our metabolic rate. We need to learn how to manage these three aspects of our weight in a lifestyle that will not leave us feeling deprived or guilty. We also need to maintain realistic weight goals, even if that means we won't be looking like the model actors and actresses on television.

You may have already tried diets of various kinds, such as those found in books, on TV, in local weight clinics, etc. Yet you couldn't get to your target weight, or you couldn't stay at your target weight. You think you "blew it" and that you can't be helped.

We don't believe you "blew" it. We will help you actually get a measure of your metabolic rate and a measure of your eating and activity level. With these three pieces of information, we can help you:

How We Can Help

We plan a program that is tailored to your metabolic, medical and social needs and lifestyle. The goal is your long term success at managing your weight and emotional well being.

We examine your metabolic rate. We also work with you in analyzing your eating habits and in modifying any unhealthy behaviors involving your weight. Together, we develop plans for a weight loss program. Such plans may involve working with a dietician and your doctor. (You may even be interested in examining surgical options if appropriate.) We also work with exercise professionals who will develop a medically safe program with you.

Using our computerized equipment, you will learn skills of recognizing and reducing the effects of stress on your body. You will be able to look at muscle tension, heart rate, and measures of blood pressure while learning to control these aspects of bodily stress. In this way, you will learn alternative behavioral methods of coping with stress and anxiety. This knowledge will help you sleep better, manage stress better, and eat appropriately.

What about my other problems that make me eat?

Some patients find that they need help in other areas of their lives, areas that other weight management programs miss, such as:

 stress related to job, family relationships, money
 coping with depression, anxiety, self-image and other emotional challenges
 coping with other medical complications such as cardiac problems, high blood pressure, asthma, other breathing problems, diabetes, headache, chronic pain, and other medical problems
 handling boredom and routine opportunities to eat
 other mental health and relationship concerns
 quitting smoking

These approaches will teach you to manage and change attitudes and thought patterns to those that enhance coping and satisfaction while controlling the urge to eat.
